British Gas New Boiler Grant and Free Boiler Scheme: How ECO4 and Help to Heat Work

The British Gas boiler scheme most people search for is usually ECO4 funding. British Gas is one of the energy suppliers Ofgem lists as delivering ECO, but ECO4 is not a product you join as a British Gas customer, and most "British Gas free boiler" searches map to ECO4 support via Help to Heat (or LA Flex). You usually need not switch retailer to check. We cannot speak for any offer British Gas runs itself. ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026. Short answer: is there a British Gas free boiler scheme?
- Searchers usually mean ECO4 support people call a "free boiler scheme," sometimes delivered with involvement of an obligated supplier (which may include large retailers such as British Gas) — not a separate "must-be-BG-customer" grant product.
- You typically do not need to switch energy retailer to explore ECO4 / Help to Heat routes (see Ofgem domestic consumer FAQs ).
- ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026 (Ofgem ).
- Eligibility ≠ guaranteed free boiler (Ofgem). A survey and funding decide measures.
If a Facebook or cold-call script says you have been "selected" by British Gas for a free boiler, treat that as marketing language until you have verified funding, installer credentials, and your own eligibility on official sources. British Gas customer status alone does not open a separate grant queue.

British Gas ECO4: where British Gas fits in
British Gas is an energy supplier, and Ofgem lists it among the suppliers that deliver ECO. Under ECO4, obligated suppliers fund energy-efficiency work after assessment. Ofgem says you can work with any obligated supplier regardless of who supplies your own energy, and its FAQs say energy companies decide which projects they fund and which installers they work with. See Ofgem's list of ECO suppliers .
That is why searches such as "British Gas new boiler grant", "British Gas new boiler scheme" and "British Gas boiler replacement scheme" usually end up at ECO4: the qualifying rules (benefits or LA Flex, EPC band and a survey) are the same whichever supplier funds the work.
What are the current offers for new boilers from British Gas?
We cannot speak for British Gas, and ApplyFreeBoiler.uk is not British Gas and is not affiliated with it. For what British Gas itself offers or accepts, see the British Gas ECO page on britishgas.co.uk . ECO4 funding is separate from any paid boiler offer.
Do I need to switch energy supplier?
For most households exploring ECO4, you can stay with your current energy retailer. Ofgem's domestic consumer FAQs explain that switching supplier is not a typical requirement to access ECO support — despite what high-pressure cold calls imply. Ads that insist you "must move to British Gas" (or any other named retailer) before a survey are a common triage red flag, not a published GOV.UK rule.
Keep three roles separate in your head:
- Obligated supplier — has duties under the ECO scheme (see Ofgem's ECO pages).
- Your bill retailer — who you pay for gas and electricity today.
- Installer or marketing company: may cold-call using a familiar brand name without being that brand's official portal.
Never pay an upfront "application fee." Use TrustMark and Gas Safe Register for installers, and read our free boiler scam guide.
Other supplier myths (E.ON, Octopus, "any big brand")
The same pattern appears across the market: a retailer name plus "free boiler" in Facebook ads or landing pages does not mean a private branded grant you must join exclusively with that company. Underneath, many offers still relate to ECO4 pathways or to an installer's own marketing, not a separate Octopus-only or E.ON-only pot.
If you also see "E.ON free boiler grant" or "Octopus ECO4 boiler" wording, apply the same checklist: check Ofgem's ECO pages, avoid retailer switching pressure, and use our eligibility check for ECO4 / Help to Heat triage.
Who should check ECO4 / Help to Heat first
On Help to Heat benefits
For private housing, the qualifying benefits are Child Benefit (subject to an income threshold), Housing Benefit, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit) and Universal Credit. Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit ended in April 2025 and are not qualifying benefits. Ofgem keeps the list on its homeowners and tenants page. If you receive one of them, start with our free eligibility check, our Help to Heat benefits hub and Universal Credit guide. Pensioners, including those on Pension Credit, can also read our guide to free boiler replacement for pensioners.
Not on benefits / unsure
Your council may run ECO4 Flex (LA Flex) if it has opted in and published a Statement of Intent. The routes are gross annual household income under £31,000 (Ofgem guidance), proxy targeting such as deprived-area measures, a health condition made worse by a cold home, and bespoke targeting; criteria vary by council. See our LA Flex guide. England households may also compare Warm Homes Local Grant vs ECO4.
Private tenants
Landlord permission, EPC bands (generally D to G) and survey rules apply, and private rented homes have their own rules in Ofgem's ECO4 delivery guidance. Benefit receipt or a supplier-branded ad does not guarantee a boiler replacement in private rented homes. See private tenants & ECO4 landlord permission.
Government boiler schemes in 2026: who is eligible?
Who is eligible for the new boiler government scheme?
It depends which scheme you mean, and most gas boiler help comes through ECO4. ECO4 is for households that receive a Help to Heat benefit or are referred through LA Flex, in a home that meets the EPC and survey rules. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is different: GOV.UK says it gives a grant towards replacing fossil fuel heating with a heat pump or biomass boiler, not a gas boiler, and it covers England and Wales (see GOV.UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme ).
Will there be a British Gas free boiler scheme in 2026?
A British Gas free boiler scheme in 2026 usually means ECO4, which can fund boilers and ends on 31 December 2026. Ofgem says it runs until then following a nine-month extension. ECO is not a cash grant, contributions may apply in some cases, and a survey decides what is funded. Our ECO4 end-date explainer covers what that means, and our free boiler scheme guide explains how ECO4 works.
What you might actually get (boiler vs multi-measure)
Honest framing: ECO4 packages can include insulation and/or heating measures. A survey decides outcomes — not a Facebook promise of a guaranteed free combi. Ofgem notes ECO is not a cash grant scheme and contributions may apply in some cases. ECO4 takes a whole-house approach: cavity wall insulation is an eligible measure, and before certain heating measures cavity wall and loft or roof insulation must be installed, already present or exempt (see Ofgem's ECO4 delivery guidance).
If your boiler is broken or inefficient, read how surveys treat those cases in our ECO4 broken boiler replacement guide. Browse wider scheme options at /grants without treating this blog as a full directory.
How to check safely (without switching supplier)
- Read official rules on GOV.UK ECO and Ofgem domestic consumer FAQs.
- Start a free, no-obligation ApplyFreeBoiler eligibility check for ECO4 / Help to Heat triage — or approach an obligated supplier via GOV.UK directly.
- Red flags: pay-to-apply fees, pressure to switch retailer before a survey, or "guaranteed free combi" before anyone has seen your home.
Free eligibility check

How ApplyFreeBoiler helps (and what we are not)
ApplyFreeBoiler.uk is run by Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd, an ECO4 heating and insulation installer. We are paid by the energy supplier for each installation we complete under ECO4. We are not paid by households. We are not British Gas, not government, not Ofgem and not an energy supplier. Where a route looks viable, our team surveys, installs and submits the work under ECO4, and a survey decides what is funded. See our editorial policy and about page.
