Gas Safe Certificate Check by Address

Enter a house number or name and a postcode to see whether a boiler or other gas appliance at the address was notified to Gas Safe Register. Each record is a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate, the certificate a homeowner gets after a Gas Safe registered business installs a new appliance.

Free and independent. We are not part of, or endorsed by, Gas Safe Register, and we do not store the addresses you search.

What this Gas Safe check shows

In England and Wales, fitting a new gas boiler, fire, cooker or similar appliance is notifiable building work. The Gas Safe registered business that did the job must notify it through Gas Safe Register within 30 days of finishing. The Register then sends the householder a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate. Each result shows the type of work, the completion date and the notification reference.

The check does not tell you the appliance is safe today, that it has been serviced, or that the engineer is still registered. Services and most repairs do not need notifying, so they never appear.

Why a record can be missing

  • The house number or name does not match how the installer entered it. Try the number on its own, or the name exactly as it appears on your post.
  • The work finished in the last few weeks and has not been notified yet.
  • The job was a service, repair or part swap, which does not need notifying.
  • The property is in Scotland or Northern Ireland, where building control works differently.
  • The installer never notified the work, or was not Gas Safe registered. Only registered engineers can legally work on gas appliances.

If a new boiler was fitted and nothing shows, ask the installer for proof of notification first. Your council's building control team can also advise.

Gas safety certificate, building regulations certificate or Gas Safe ID?

“Gas Safe certificate” can mean three different things. Only the first is something this checker can find.

Building Regulations Compliance Certificate

Issued by Gas Safe Register after a new appliance is installed and notified.

Solicitors often ask for it when you sell a home.

This is the record the checker above searches.

Landlord Gas Safety Record (CP12)

Landlords must have gas appliances checked every year.

Tenants get a copy within 28 days of each check, and new tenants before they move in.

These are not on a public register, so ask your landlord or letting agent.

Engineer's Gas Safe ID card

Every registered engineer carries a card with a licence number.

Check it on the Gas Safe Register website, by calling 0800 408 5500, or by texting “Gas” and the seven-digit licence number to 85080.

The back of the card lists the work they are qualified to do.

How to get a replacement boiler installation certificate

  1. Run the check above to confirm the installation was notified, and note the reference.
  2. Order a replacement from Gas Safe Register's building regulations certificate page. You will need the address and postcode, and a fee may apply.
  3. If nothing was notified, contact the installer. If they cannot help, speak to your council's building control team about getting the work signed off.

Old or broken boiler? You may get a free replacement

If your boiler is old, broken or inefficient and you get a qualifying benefit, you may qualify for a new A-rated boiler, fitted and notified by a Gas Safe registered installer, at no cost.

Common questions

Can I check my gas safety certificate online?

You can check Building Regulations Compliance Certificates online, with the checker on this page or through Gas Safe Register. Landlord gas safety records (CP12) are not on a public register. Your landlord must give you a copy.

How do I find my boiler installation certificate?

Look through the paperwork from the installer and the post you received from Gas Safe Register after the install. If it is lost, run the check above to confirm the work was notified, then order a replacement from Gas Safe Register.

Is my boiler registered with Gas Safe?

Gas Safe Register records the notification of the installation, not the boiler itself. A result above means the install was notified. Registering a boiler for its warranty is a separate step you do with the manufacturer.

How long after installation does the certificate arrive?

The installer has 30 days from finishing the work to notify it, and the certificate is posted after that. If it has not arrived by then, ask the installer to confirm they notified the work.

Is this an official Gas Safe Register service?

No. Apply Free Boiler is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Gas Safe Register. The checker reads the records behind the Register's replacement certificate service. For anything official, contact Gas Safe Register directly.
