Octopus ECO4 Scheme Explained: Any Obligated Supplier Can Fund Measures

ApplyFreeBoiler Team
ApplyFreeBoiler.uk is run by Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd, an ECO4 installer. We are not Octopus Energy, the UK Government, Ofgem or an energy supplier. Confirm live GOV.UK and Ofgem rules before you act on any ad.
There is not a separate "Octopus-only free boiler scheme" you must join as a customer product in the way many ads imply. "Octopus ECO4" searches usually mean ECO4 — the Great Britain energy-company obligation — which obligated suppliers fund through delivery chains. You typically do not need to switch to Octopus Energy to explore ECO4 or Help to Heat routes. ECO4 runs to 31 December 2026. Eligibility does not guarantee a free boiler. Short answer: is there an Octopus ECO4 free boiler scheme?
- Searchers usually mean ECO4 support associated with obligated energy suppliers. Octopus may publish ECO, GBIS or BUS explainers and partner pathways — that is not the same as a private "must-be-Octopus-customer free boiler grant" product.
- You typically do not need to switch retailer to start an eligibility check (verify Ofgem domestic consumer FAQs ).
- ECO4 runs to 31 December 2026.
- Eligibility ≠ guaranteed free boiler. A survey and funding decide measures.

Check eligibilityWhat ECO4 is (and what "Octopus ECO4" usually means)
ECO4 is the Great Britain Energy Company Obligation: obligated suppliers fund energy-efficiency measures for eligible households after assessment. Common routes include Help to Heat (qualifying benefits on GOV.UK) and LA Flex (council flexible eligibility where published). Packages can be multi-measure — a survey decides outcomes, not ad copy promising a free combi.
"Octopus ECO4" in search results and social posts often labels Octopus Energy's ECO-related content, partner pages, heat-pump finance hubs, or user-generated threads about applying "through Octopus." That language maps back to the same wider scheme rules — not a separate Octopus-only grant pot. We do not invent obligation volumes or publish a fixed roll-call of which suppliers are obligated; verify live lists on Ofgem if you need named obligations.

Obligated suppliers vs your current energy retailer
Three roles often get blurred in Octopus-branded ads. Keep them separate:
- Obligated supplier — carries scheme duties under ECO4 (verify who is obligated on live Ofgem guidance; we do not treat any one retailer as the only funding source).
- Your bill retailer — who you pay for gas and electricity today (Octopus, British Gas, E.ON, or any other supplier).
- Installer / lead-gen partner — may market under a familiar brand without being that brand's official application portal.
Funding chains can involve obligated parties and installers without requiring you to switch retail supply. Apply Free Boiler does not work exclusively with Octopus Energy, and we are not Octopus's partner portal.
Do you need to switch to Octopus Energy for ECO4?
Usually no for exploring ECO4 or Help to Heat eligibility. Ofgem's domestic consumer FAQs explain that you can typically stay with your current energy supplier when accessing ECO support — despite scripts that insist you must move to Octopus (or any other named retailer) before a survey.
Pressure to switch retailer to "qualify" for a free boiler is a red flag. See our free boiler scam guide for verification steps (TrustMark, Gas Safe, no pay-to-apply fees).
Octopus heat-pump finance pages that appear in the same SERP are a different product from ECO4 grants — credit offers are not the same as Help to Heat-funded measures. Compare finance vs grant routes in our interest-free boiler vs ECO4 free grant guide.
Octopus, British Gas, E.ON and other supplier-named ECO4 searches
The same underlying pattern appears across brands: retailer name plus "free boiler" or "ECO4" in marketing usually points at ECO4-related pathways and installer lead-gen — not a private grant you must join exclusively with that company. This page is Octopus-primary; the wider supplier-myth hub for British Gas–style searches remains our British Gas guide.

Who should check ECO4 or LA Flex first
On Help to Heat benefits
If you receive qualifying benefits listed on GOV.UK, start with /eligibility, our Help to Heat benefits hub, and pensioner and Pension Credit guide. We do not invent income thresholds — confirm live GOV.UK lists.
Not on benefits / unsure
Your council may run Flexible Eligibility (LA Flex) where it publishes a Statement of Intent — criteria vary. See our LA Flex guide. England households may also compare Warm Homes Local Grant vs ECO4.
Private tenants
Landlord permission, EPC bands, and survey rules apply. An Octopus-branded ad does not bypass tenancy limits — see private tenants & ECO4 landlord permission.
How Apply Free Boiler helps (we are not Octopus)
Apply Free Boiler is run by Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd, an ECO4 installer, working on ECO4 and related pathways. We are not Octopus Energy, not the UK Government, not Ofgem and not an obligated supplier. We check eligibility and paperwork and, where a route looks viable, our team surveys, installs and submits the work under ECO4 and is paid by the energy supplier, not by you. No guaranteed funding.
