Enter your postcode to find your home's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and see whether its rating fits the ECO4 free boiler scheme. What Decides If You Get a Free Boiler

Free boilers come through ECO4, which energy suppliers fund and Ofgem administers. Four things decide your answer.

Where you live

ECO4 covers England, Scotland and Wales. It doesn't run in Northern Ireland, and it ends on 31 December 2026.

Your household route

You need a qualifying benefit such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit. Without one, your council may refer you under LA Flex, for example if gross household income is under £31,000.

Your home's EPC band

ECO4 targets the least efficient homes, generally EPC bands D to G. The checker above shows your band.

Whether you own or rent

Homeowners can apply. Private tenants need their landlord's permission, and a boiler replacement is usually not eligible in a private rented home. Social housing has its own rules.

Read the full rules on our ECO4 scheme page or see how LA Flex works if you don't get benefits.

What This Checker Can't Tell You

  • Your benefits or income. The checker only reads your EPC. We ask about your household when you apply.
  • Homes in Scotland. Scottish certificates sit on a separate register, so they won't show here. You can still apply.
  • A final answer. A qualifying EPC band doesn't guarantee a free boiler. A survey decides what, if anything, is funded.

Boiler Grant Checker FAQs

Is the boiler grant checker free?

Yes. Looking up your EPC costs nothing and you don't need to sign up.

What EPC rating do I need for a free boiler?

ECO4 generally targets homes in EPC bands D to G. Private rented and social housing have their own rules.

Can I get a free boiler without benefits?

Possibly. Under LA Flex, councils can refer households without a qualifying benefit, for example where gross household income is under £31,000 or a health condition is made worse by a cold home. It depends on whether your council takes part.

What if my home has no EPC?

You can still apply. Not every home has a certificate on the register, and your home is assessed before any work goes ahead.

Will I have to pay anything?

ECO4 measures are often fully funded by energy suppliers, but some households may be asked to contribute.
