Is the Free Boiler Grant a Scam? How to Spot Legitimate ECO4 Offers

ApplyFreeBoiler Team
ApplyFreeBoiler.uk is run by Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd, an ECO4 installer. We are not the UK Government, Ofgem or an energy supplier. Official scheme rules are on Ofgem's ECO pages.
Early disclosure
Short answer
ECO4 is a real Ofgem-administered supplier obligation running through 31 December 2026. The free boiler route is genuine, but marketing and cold calls can mislead. Verify TrustMark and Gas Safe, ask which named supplier or council funds the work, and never pay a fee just to apply.
Dual point to keep in mind: ECO4 is a real Ofgem-administered supplier obligation through 31 December 2026, and marketing or cold calls about “free boilers” can still mislead. Both can be true at once.
What “free boiler grant” usually means
In UK search, “free boiler grant” almost always points to measures delivered under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), currently in its ECO4 phase. Larger energy suppliers must fund energy-efficiency upgrades for eligible homes. A boiler replacement can be part of that package when the property, household, and survey meet the rules.
Important Ofgem-aligned points:
- It is not a cash grant you receive to spend freely on any contractor.
- Eligibility is not a guaranteed install — survey and funding rules decide what (if anything) goes ahead.
- In some cases, customer contributions may be asked for; that should be explained in writing before work starts.
Official starting points: GOV.UK Energy Company Obligation and Ofgem’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) pages for homeowners and scheme overview (including linked FAQs and guidance on that hub).
Why people feel scammed even when ECO4 is real
Frustration often comes from process and marketing, not from ECO4 “not existing”:
- An online “you qualify” message is treated as a promise, then a survey finds the home cannot be funded under the rules.
- Cold calls imply a government official is on the line when the caller is a private marketer.
- Pressure to decide immediately, share bank details, or pay a deposit “to secure the grant”.
- Confusion between ECO-funded work and paid-for boiler sales dressed up in grant language.
Verification checklist before you share documents
Ask which energy supplier obligation or local-authority Flex route would fund the measure — get a name, not just “government grant”.
Check the installer or assessor on TrustMark and confirm Gas Safe registration for gas work.
Ask what is fully funded versus any contribution, in writing, before a survey date is locked in.
Never pay a fee solely to apply, to “release” funding, or to keep a place on a list.
Prefer callbacks you initiate to published company numbers, not numbers from an unexpected text.
Red flags
Claims to be “from the government” or “Ofgem calling” without a way to verify independently.
Asks for an upfront fee, deposit or “admin charge” to apply for, reserve or release a grant.
Asks for your bank or card details to “release” funding. The supplier funds an ECO4 install, so you should not need to hand over payment details to release a grant.
Cold calls, texts or doorstep visits that pressure you to book or decide on the spot.
Demands for vouchers or any payment before a written scope of funded works.
Refusal to name the supplier, TrustMark business, or Gas Safe engineer who would do the work.
Threats that funding “expires today” unless you decide on the call.
Guarantees of approval before any survey of your home.
How to verify TrustMark, Gas Safe, and council or supplier routes
- TrustMark — search the business on trustmark.org.uk and match the trading name and postcode you were given.
- Gas Safe Register — check the engineer or firm on gassaferegister.co.uk before any gas appliance work. After a boiler is fitted, check the install was notified with our Gas Safe certificate check.
- Supplier or council — ask for the named ECO supplier or local Flexible Eligibility route. Cross-check with published council ECO Flex pages or the supplier’s own ECO information where available.
- Scheme facts — re-read GOV.UK ECO and Ofgem ECO so marketing claims do not rewrite the rules.
Who runs this site
ApplyFreeBoiler.uk is run by Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd, an ECO4 heating and insulation installer. We are paid by the energy supplier for each installation we complete under ECO4, not by households. You can read how we are funded in our editorial policy and find out more on our about page.
We are not the UK Government, Ofgem, a local council or your energy supplier. An eligibility check is not a promise of approval: scheme rules and a survey of your home decide what is funded. You should still check TrustMark and Gas Safe details for any installer, including us.
If you think you were scammed
Stop further payments, keep messages and call records, and get independent advice:
- Citizens Advice for consumer guidance.
- Action Fraud to report suspected fraud in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (Scotland uses Police Scotland reporting routes).
If a company used TrustMark or Gas Safe branding falsely, you can also raise that with those registers using their published complaint routes.

Want a low-pressure eligibility check?
If you only want to see whether an ECO4-style route might apply to your household, you can start a short check. It is not a guarantee of funding or installation, and you should still verify TrustMark and Gas Safe details before any works.
