Worked example

Example inputs, chosen only to show the arithmetic: a current boiler efficiency of 75%, a new boiler efficiency of 92% and 11,500 kWh of energy use a year (the typical medium-home gas figure quoted in the FAQ below).

  1. Efficiency gain: (92 − 75) ÷ 100 = 0.17.
  2. Annual saving: 0.17 × 11,500 kWh × £0.073 per kWh = £142.72, shown as £143 a year.
  3. CO₂ reduction: 0.17 × 11,500 kWh × 0.182 kg per kWh = 356 kg a year.
  4. Payback: £3,000 ÷ £142.72 = 21 years.

How this is calculated and sources

The calculator takes the gap between the two efficiencies as a share of your annual energy use, then values it at £0.073 per kWh of gas and 0.182 kg of CO₂ per kWh, and divides an assumed £3,000 boiler cost by the saving. It does not look up your tariff or fuel type. The 0.182 kg figure is the UK Government GHG Conversion Factors 2026 (DESNZ) factor for natural gas. The £0.073 gas price and the £3,000 boiler cost are assumptions used by this calculator. The output is a rough estimate, not a quote. Under ECO4, eligible households do not pay for the boiler, so the payback figure only applies if you pay for it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the boiler efficiency calculator?

Our calculator provides estimates based on average UK energy prices and typical usage patterns. Actual savings may vary depending on your specific circumstances, energy prices in your area, and how you use your heating system.

What information do I need to use the calculator?

You'll need your current boiler's efficiency rating (check your boiler manual or energy label), the efficiency of the new boiler you're considering (modern condensing boilers are typically 90-98%), and your annual energy usage in kWh (found on your energy bills).

How do I find my current boiler's efficiency?

Check your boiler's user manual, look for an energy label on the boiler itself, or search for your boiler model online. You can also use our boiler finder tool to look up your specific model's efficiency rating.

What is the average energy usage for a UK home?

Ofgem's typical figure for a medium UK home is 11,500 kWh of gas a year for heating and hot water. Larger homes or those with poor insulation may use more, while smaller, well-insulated homes may use less.

Can I get a free boiler through the ECO4 scheme?

Yes, if you're eligible for the ECO4 scheme, you can get a free A-rated boiler installation. Check your eligibility using our eligibility checker - you may qualify if you receive certain benefits or have a low household income.

How much can I save with a more efficient boiler?

Savings depend on your current boiler's efficiency and your energy usage. Use our calculator to get a personalised estimate for your situation.
