Who Qualifies for a Boiler Grant for Pensioners in 2026?
Direct Answer:
You may qualify if you or someone in your household receives Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit), or another Help to Heat qualifying benefit, and your home meets the EPC and survey rules. The State Pension alone does not qualify. If you receive no qualifying benefit, your council's LA Flex route may still help.
Main Qualification Routes for Pensioners
Pension Credit
Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit. Read our qualifying benefits page and the official GOV.UK Pension Credit page.
Other Help to Heat benefits
Housing Benefit, Universal Credit, Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, and Child Benefit (subject to an income threshold). See Ofgem's list.
ECO4 Flex (LA Flex)
For households that do not receive a qualifying benefit. Councils opt in, publish a Statement of Intent and can refer households on income, area or health grounds. See our LA Flex guide.
Key Points:
- • The State Pension alone does NOT qualify. Pension Credit does.
- • Attendance Allowance alone is not a Help to Heat benefit. The LA Flex health route (Route 3) may help if a health condition is made worse by a cold home, where your council has opted in. See LA Flex.
- • Qualifying for ECO does not guarantee work is installed. A survey decides what is funded.
Pension Guarantee Credit vs Pension Savings Credit
Pension Credit is a DWP benefit for people over State Pension age on a low income. Guarantee Credit tops income up to a minimum level. Savings Credit is a smaller top-up that some people still receive under older rules. Both count: the GOV.UK Energy Company Obligation page lists Pension Guarantee Credit and Pension Savings Credit among the benefits that can make private-housing households eligible for help. If that list changes, treat GOV.UK as the source of truth. We are not DWP, so for benefit rules read GOV.UK Pension Credit.
What Else You Need Besides Pension Credit
The benefit alone is not enough. For private housing, GOV.UK typically requires:
- Owner-occupiers: an energy efficiency rating of D, E, F or G
- Private rent: a rating of E, F or G plus the owner's permission
Find or request a certificate on GOV.UK find an energy certificate. Homeowners follow the owner-occupier path, and private tenants need written landlord consent before works. Social housing pathways under ECO often focus on insulation or first-time central heating rather than a like-for-like boiler replacement, so check our eligibility page and Ofgem guidance rather than assuming a free boiler. Repair, replacement or upgrade can be possible under the technical rules, for example broken versus inefficient systems, but the survey decides.
Free Boilers for Pensioners Not on Benefits
Direct Answer:
You may still qualify without a benefit if your council has opted in to ECO4 Flex (LA Flex) and your household meets one of its routes. One route is a combined gross annual household income under £31,000, according to Ofgem. The State Pension and age alone do not qualify.
- Only councils that have opted in and published a Statement of Intent can refer households, so the routes and criteria vary by area. The other routes are proxy targeting, such as deprived-area measures, a health condition made worse by a cold home, and bespoke targeting.
- Read our LA Flex scheme guide and ask your council's energy team whether it has a current Statement of Intent.
- Not sure which route fits? Our free eligibility check shows whether a route may apply. It is not a guarantee of funding, and a survey decides what is funded.
Central Heating Grants for Over 60s
Being over 60 does not, on its own, qualify you for ECO4 central heating help. Qualification runs through the routes above: a qualifying benefit such as Pension Credit, an LA Flex route, or, in England, the Warm Homes: Local Grant covered below. Your home must also meet the EPC and survey rules.
Warm Home Discount Is Not a Free Boiler Grant
Warm Home Discount is useful related winter support, but it is not the same as ECO4 Help to Heat qualification for a boiler or heating measure. A Warm Home Discount award does not, by itself, mean you will get a free boiler. We do not treat Warm Home Discount or Council Tax Reduction as Help to Heat boiler-qualifying benefits, so check the live GOV.UK list in case that changes. See the GOV.UK Warm Home Discount page, or our Warm Home Discount guide for who gets the £150 this winter.
Which Schemes Can Help Pensioners With Heating Right Now?
Direct Answer:
Two routes are live: ECO4 (including council referrals through LA Flex), which ends on 31 December 2026, and, in England only, the Warm Homes: Local Grant. The Great British Insulation Scheme has closed. Read our ECO4 scheme guide for how ECO4 works.
Active Schemes
ECO4 Scheme (Energy Company Obligation)
ACTIVEEnergy suppliers fund heating and insulation measures for eligible households until 31 December 2026. ECO4 takes a whole-house approach and targets the least efficient homes. Source: Ofgem.
ECO4 Flex (LA Flex)
VARIES BY AREACouncils opt in and publish a Statement of Intent, so criteria vary by area. Routes include gross annual household income under £31,000, proxy targeting, a health condition made worse by a cold home and bespoke targeting. Source: Ofgem ECO4 delivery guidance.
Best for pensioners who do not receive a qualifying benefit. Contact your local council's energy team, or read our Statement of Intent guide.
Warm Homes: Local Grant
ENGLAND ONLYRun by local councils for privately owned homes (owner-occupied or private rented) with an EPC of D to G. Eligibility usually depends on household income of £36,000 a year or less, a qualifying low-income postcode, or certain means-tested benefits. It can fund insulation, low-carbon heating such as heat pumps, solar panels and smart controls. Apply on GOV.UK and your council will then contact you. See Warm Homes: Local Grant vs ECO4.

British Gas Free Boilers for Pensioners: What the Search Usually Means
Direct Answer:
British Gas is an energy supplier, and Ofgem lists it among the suppliers that deliver ECO. Searches for British Gas boiler offers for pensioners usually mean ECO4 funding, and ECO4 qualification depends on your benefits, LA Flex route and home, not on who supplies your energy.
Ofgem says you can work with any obligated energy supplier regardless of who provides your current energy, and that energy companies decide which projects they fund and which installers they work with. Being a pensioner, or a British Gas customer, does not qualify you on its own. For anything British Gas offers its own customers, ask British Gas directly.
ApplyFreeBoiler.uk is run by Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd, an ECO4 heating and insulation installer. We are not British Gas and are not affiliated with it. Our British Gas boiler scheme and ECO4 guide explains how the supplier names in adverts relate to the scheme.
Will a Boiler Replacement Save Pensioners Money?
Direct Answer:
It can, but savings depend on your property, how old and inefficient your current boiler is, and how you use your heating. A new A-rated boiler is generally cheaper to run than an old inefficient one.
How Do Pensioners Apply?
Direct Answer:
Check your eligibility, apply, have your details confirmed, book a survey, wait for the funding decision and then arrange installation. Timescales depend on your survey, funding approval and installer availability. An installation date is only confirmed after your survey.
Application Steps
Initial Eligibility Check
Use our online checker. Have your benefit letters and boiler details to hand.
What You May Need:
- • Your name, postcode and address
- • The benefit you receive, such as Pension Credit
- • Details of your current heating
Application and Advisor Call
An advisor contacts you to confirm your details and explain what evidence is needed.
Tip: Tell them about any health conditions made worse by the cold, as this can matter for LA Flex.
Benefit and Property Checks
Your benefit and your home's EPC band are checked against the scheme rules.
Common Causes of Delay:
- • A name on your benefit letter that does not match your application
- • An out-of-date benefit letter
- • Not knowing your home's EPC band
Home Survey
A surveyor visits to assess your home, your heating and your insulation. The survey decides what is funded.
The Surveyor May Check:
- • Your current boiler and heating system
- • Existing insulation, including cavity wall and loft or roof insulation
- • Whether the minimum insulation preconditions are met
Tip: Make sure the surveyor can reach the boiler and loft.
Funding Decision
The survey result and the supplier's funding decide which measures, if any, go ahead. Ask for the decision and any cost in writing.
Installation
Your installer contacts you to arrange a date. Gas work must be done by Gas Safe registered engineers.
Tip: Accept the first date that works for you, as rescheduling can delay your installation.
Documents Pensioners and Carers Often Need
Having paperwork ready speeds up a genuine check, but it does not guarantee approval.
- • Pension Credit award evidence (a letter or digital confirmation from the Pension Service)
- • Photo ID and proof of address
- • Proof of ownership or tenancy
- • Written landlord permission if you rent privately
- • Your EPC, if you already hold one
Other Ways to Get Help:
- • Your council: ask for the energy or housing team about LA Flex and the Warm Homes: Local Grant (England)
- • An obligated energy supplier: see Ofgem's guidance for homeowners and tenants
- • Citizens Advice, for free independent help with applications
Why Do Some Pensioner Applications Stall?
Direct Answer:
Common reasons include assuming the State Pension qualifies, incomplete evidence, applying to the wrong scheme and not checking tenure rules. All are avoidable with preparation, though a survey decides what is funded.
Five Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Mistake #1: Confusing State Pension With Pension Credit
The State Pension alone does not qualify. Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit) does.
How to Avoid:
Check your award letter for the words "Pension Credit". If you are not sure what you receive, see the GOV.UK Pension Credit page.
Mistake #2: Assuming Boiler Age Decides It
ECO4 targets the least efficient homes, generally EPC bands D to G. An old boiler in an efficient home may not be funded.
How to Avoid:
Look up your home's EPC on the GOV.UK energy certificate register and let the survey decide what is funded.
Mistake #3: Incomplete or Out-of-Date Evidence
Missing proof of benefits, or names that do not match across documents, can hold up an application.
How to Avoid:
Keep a current benefit letter to hand and make sure the name on it matches your application.
Mistake #4: Applying to a Closed or Wrong Scheme
The Great British Insulation Scheme closed on 31 March 2026, so offers that still mention it deserve a second look.
How to Avoid:
Check Ofgem's ECO page for the live scheme and, in England, the council-run Warm Homes: Local Grant on GOV.UK.
Mistake #5: Not Checking Tenure Rules
Private tenants need written landlord permission, and the repair or replacement of a boiler is generally not eligible in private rented homes. Social housing has its own rules.
How to Avoid:
Read our private tenants guide and Ofgem's ECO4 delivery guidance.
If You Are Turned Down - Your Options:
- • Ask for the reason, and whether another measure such as insulation could be funded. See our guide to the loft insulation grant for pensioners
- • Ask your council about LA Flex if you do not receive a qualifying benefit
- • In England, ask your council about the Warm Homes: Local Grant
- • Get free independent advice from Citizens Advice
How Long Does It Take From Application to Installation?
Direct Answer:
There is no fixed timescale. It depends on survey availability, funding approval and installer availability, so we do not promise a date. Installation is only arranged once the survey and funding are confirmed. ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026, so allow time.
What Should Pensioners Ask Before Work Starts?
Direct Answer:
The boiler fitted depends on your survey and the installer. Ask which make and model is being fitted, and check the warranty terms, before work starts.
Questions to Ask Your Installer:
- • Which make and model will be fitted?
- • What warranty applies, and who do I contact if something goes wrong?
- • Is there any cost to me? Please put it in writing.
- • Can I see the Gas Safe registration of the engineer doing the work?
- • Which other measures, such as insulation, are included?
How Can Pensioners Avoid Free Boiler Scams?
Direct Answer:
Do not pay upfront to apply, check that installers are on the Gas Safe Register and TrustMark, get everything in writing, and be wary of unsolicited calls or visits. Read our free boiler scam checklist.
Red Flags: Signs of a Scam
They Ask for Money Upfront
Legitimate ECO4 help does not require an application fee. Be cautious about "deposits", "survey fees" or "administration charges".
Unsolicited Calls or Visits
Be wary of unexpected contact claiming a "limited time offer". Take the caller's details and check them yourself before agreeing to anything.
Pressure to Decide Immediately
"Offer expires today" or "only a few left in your area". You should have time to consider the offer and check credentials.
Cannot Provide a Gas Safe Number
Anyone doing gas work must be on the Gas Safe Register. Check the engineer's number on gassaferegister.co.uk.
How to Check a Provider:
- • Read Ofgem's ECO page to see how the scheme works
- • Check Gas Safe registration on the Gas Safe Register
- • Look for TrustMark registration on trustmark.org.uk
- • Ask Citizens Advice if you are unsure about an offer

Frequently Asked Questions
Can pensioners get a free boiler?
Some can. ECO4 may fund a replacement boiler if the household receives a qualifying benefit such as Pension Credit, or is referred through LA Flex, and the home meets the EPC and survey rules. Age or the State Pension alone does not qualify, and a survey decides what is funded.
Can over 60s or an elderly person get help with a new boiler?
They may, but age is not a qualifying route on its own. Help can come through Pension Credit or another qualifying benefit, through LA Flex (including the health route where a condition is made worse by a cold home), or in England through the Warm Homes: Local Grant, subject to the home and a survey.
Who qualifies for free boiler replacement?
A household may qualify through a Help to Heat benefit such as Pension Credit or Universal Credit, or through an ECO4 Flex route such as a combined gross annual household income under £31,000 where the council has opted in. The home generally needs an EPC of D to G, private tenants need landlord permission, and a survey decides what is funded.
Do British Gas do free boilers for pensioners?
We cannot speak for British Gas, and ApplyFreeBoiler.uk is not British Gas or affiliated with it. British Gas is an energy supplier that Ofgem lists as delivering ECO, but ECO4 qualification depends on your benefits, LA Flex route and home, not on who supplies your energy. Being a pensioner or a British Gas customer does not qualify you on its own.
What health conditions can help a household qualify?
Under the LA Flex health route, Ofgem lists a severe or long-term health condition that is made worse by living in a cold home, such as a cardiovascular condition, respiratory disease, limited mobility or immunosuppression. It only applies where your council has opted in, so criteria vary by area.
At what age is a boiler considered old?
ECO4 has no boiler-age rule. It looks at your home's EPC band, how you qualify and what a survey recommends, so age alone does not decide it.
Can I get a free boiler if I only receive the State Pension?
Not on the State Pension alone. The State Pension is not a Help to Heat qualifying benefit. Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit) is. If you receive Pension Credit you may qualify, subject to your home meeting the EPC and survey rules. If you receive neither, your council's LA Flex route may help.
Do both Pension Guarantee Credit and Pension Savings Credit count for ECO4?
Yes. GOV.UK's Energy Company Obligation page lists both among the benefits that can make private-housing households eligible for help. You still need to meet the property and survey rules, so eligibility is not a promise of installation. If the GOV.UK list changes, treat GOV.UK as the source of truth.
What EPC rating does a pensioner's home need for ECO4?
For private housing, GOV.UK typically requires owner-occupier homes to be in bands D to G, and privately rented homes in bands E to G with the owner's permission. Check your certificate on the GOV.UK energy performance certificate register. Social housing pathways differ and often focus on insulation or first-time central heating rather than a like-for-like boiler replacement.
Is Warm Home Discount the same as a free boiler grant?
No. Warm Home Discount is related winter energy support. It is not the same as Help to Heat qualification for ECO4 boiler or heating measures, so do not treat a Warm Home Discount award as proof you will get a free boiler.
Do I qualify if I receive Attendance Allowance?
Attendance Allowance alone is not a Help to Heat qualifying benefit. If you or someone in your household has a health condition made worse by living in a cold home, such as a cardiovascular or respiratory condition, limited mobility or a weakened immune system, the LA Flex health route (Route 3) may help where your council has opted in.
Is the Winter Fuel Payment a qualifying benefit?
No. The Winter Fuel Payment is not on Ofgem's list of ECO4 Help to Heat qualifying benefits. Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Universal Credit are, among others.
What if I am over 65 but do not get Pension Credit?
You may still be referred through ECO4 Flex (LA Flex). Councils opt in and publish a Statement of Intent. Routes include gross annual household income under £31,000, proxy targeting such as deprived-area measures, a health condition made worse by a cold home, and bespoke targeting. In England, the Warm Homes: Local Grant is run by councils for privately owned homes with an EPC of D to G, and applications are made on GOV.UK.
Do I qualify if my boiler is fairly new?
There is no simple boiler-age rule. ECO4 targets the least efficient homes, generally EPC bands D to G, and a survey decides which measures are funded. If your boiler is recent but your home is poorly insulated, insulation may be the better fit than a new boiler.
Can I choose which company installs my boiler?
Ofgem says energy companies decide which projects they fund and which installers they work with, so you may not be able to choose. Check any installer on TrustMark and the Gas Safe Register, and ask for the warranty terms in writing before work starts.
What happens if I am a private tenant?
You need your landlord's written permission, and Ofgem's FAQs say the repair or replacement of a boiler is generally not eligible in private rented homes. Insulation or other measures may still be possible. Our private tenants guide explains the rules.
Do I have to pay anything upfront?
You should not pay a fee to apply for legitimate ECO4 help. Ofgem's FAQs say that in some cases you may be asked to contribute to the cost of the installation, so get any cost in writing before work starts. Be cautious if anyone asks for money before a survey or funding is confirmed.
What if my boiler breaks before my installation date?
ECO4 is not an emergency repair service. Tell your installer straight away and ask a Gas Safe registered engineer to check or repair the boiler in the meantime. If you are without heating and vulnerable, contact your council or Citizens Advice.
