ECO4 Free Boiler Scheme 2026: Eligibility, Process, and How to Apply

ECO4 free boiler scheme - modern A-rated boiler installation in a UK home

ApplyFreeBoiler Team

ApplyFreeBoiler.uk is run by Reliant Energy Solutions Ltd, an ECO4 heating and insulation installer. We are paid by the energy supplier for each installation we complete under ECO4. We are not paid by households. See our editorial policy.

ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026. That date comes from Ofgem's Energy Company Obligation page, so the free boiler scheme in 2026 is a closing window rather than an open-ended offer.

Under the Energy Company Obligation, larger suppliers fund energy-efficiency measures for eligible households. For the right property, that can include replacing a broken or inefficient boiler with a modern efficient system at no cost to the household when fully funded.

This 2026 guide focuses on eligibility logic, documents, timelines, and the mistakes that cause rejections. It is written for homeowners and private tenants who want a clear path from "maybe I qualify" to a completed install, without hype statistics you cannot verify.

Quick wins from this guide
  • ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026, so allow time for the survey and installation.
  • Confirm benefits and tenure before you chase install dates.
  • Expect a survey: websites cannot approve a boiler from a postcode alone.
  • Use Gas Safe engineers and keep the funding offer in writing.

What is the ECO4 free boiler scheme?

ECO is not a single charity grant paid from a council desk. It is an obligation on medium and large energy suppliers to deliver savings through approved measures. Installers and managing agents work within that framework to identify eligible homes and complete compliant jobs.

A "free boiler" outcome means the eligible measure package is funded so you are not invoiced for the approved scope. It does not mean every home with an old boiler is automatically accepted. Property characteristics, existing heating, EPC context, and household eligibility all matter.

Ofgem's Energy Company Obligation page is the official reference. Treat marketing pages (including ours) as guidance that must still pass a formal check.

Who qualifies for an ECO4 free boiler in 2026?

Benefits route: Under ECO4 Help to Heat for private housing, the qualifying benefits are Child Benefit (subject to an income threshold), Housing Benefit, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit) and Universal Credit. Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit ended in April 2025 and are not qualifying benefits. The full list is on Ofgem's homeowners and tenants page.

Property route signals: ECO4 targets the least efficient homes, generally EPC bands D to G, with separate rules for private rented and social housing. EPC band alone is not a magic key; the survey and theECO4 delivery guidance decide what can be funded.

LA Flex (ECO4 Flex): Councils that opt in publish a Statement of Intent and can refer households who do not get a qualifying benefit. The routes are gross annual household income under £31,000 (Ofgem guidance), proxy targeting such as deprived-area measures, a health condition made worse by living in a cold home, and bespoke targeting. Availability varies by council; see Ofgem's ECO4 delivery guidance.

Tenure: Homeowners are straightforward. Private tenants usually need landlord permission. Social housing uses different programme rules more often than private ECO marketing suggests.

What boiler and extras might you receive?

Product choice is driven by compliance and suitability, not showroom preference. Combi boilers are common in smaller homes with adequate water pressure; other system types appear when the property needs them. Heating controls can be part of a package.

ECO4 takes a whole-house approach, and cavity wall insulation is an eligible measure. Before certain heating measures, cavity wall and loft or roof insulation must already be installed, be present or be exempt, so insulation may come first. The detail is in Ofgem's ECO4 delivery guidance.

Warranties should be explained at handover. Register manufacturer cover and keep Gas Safe documentation.

How the application and survey process works

A phone or web check only estimates fit. The survey measures the home, confirms heating type, checks flue positions, and identifies risks. If the home fails technical checks, a responsible provider stops rather than forcing a non-compliant install.

After approval, installation day should include isolation of old equipment, safe fit of the new system, testing, and a controls walkthrough. Ask how to book callback support if something beeps or shows a fault code in week one.

ECO4 timing and why acting in 2026 still matters

ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026, as stated on Ofgem's Energy Company Obligation page. Read our ECO4 end date explainer for what the deadline means in practice. Installer capacity can tighten as the year closes, so a late start carries real risk.

If you already meet the rules, starting paperwork now is rational. If you do not, the Warm Homes: Local Grant is the other live route. It is England only, run by local councils, and covers insulation, low-carbon heating and solar for privately owned homes with an EPC of D to G. Apply on GOV.UK and the council will contact you. Our Warm Homes Plan guide covers the wider programme.

Savings expectations and safety standards

Efficient boilers can reduce gas use compared with ancient, poorly controlled systems, but household behaviour and tariffs dominate outcomes. Use your own meter data for truth.

Never accept gas work from someone who cannot show Gas Safe credentials. For wider retrofit quality, TrustMark is the government-endorsed quality mark many grant jobs use.

Why ECO4 boiler applications get declined

  • Benefit letters out of date or not matching the named applicant.
  • Home already has a recent efficient boiler with no qualifying need.
  • Access, flue, or ventilation constraints that block a compliant install.
  • Tenant applications without landlord authority.
  • Mismatch between marketing promises and actual scheme scoring.

Ask for a clear reason. Sometimes insulation-only measures remain possible even when a boiler does not.
